WE CAN DO MORE
Fighting For Our Public Schools
Kyle believes every Virginian should benefit from an exceptional education regardless of skin color or zip code. He will fight to ensure that students have the resources they need to receive a quality education. We must break the school-to-prison pipeline that too often relies on arrests and law enforcement to address misbehavior that could be addressed within the school. College is not the path for everyone. Kyle believes students should have multiple tuition-free pathways to be able to access the opportunities they deserve. He will work to expand access to career and technical education, to offer multiple pathways to meet the diverse needs and interests of Virginia’s high school students and the needs of our economy.
Virginia’s lakes, rivers, coasts and environment are some of its most beautiful and economically important resources we have. We must internalize the negative externalities of pollution and decrease environmental burdens for everyone.
Working For Small Businesses
The COVID-19 pandemic has hit small businesses especially hard. The Richmond region is seeing small businesses close their doors every day. Employers should not have to shoulder this entire burden by themselves. Kyle supports making significant, immediate grants and loans to help small businesses make payroll, pay rent and other expenses, and keep their doors open.
Criminal Justice Reform
Kyle believes we must ensure real accountability for individual and systemic misconduct in our police departments and reimagine policing for the benefit and safety of all Virginians. This is why Kyle was proud to serve on Virginia's Community Colleges Law Enforcement Curricula Review Task Force. As a former Richmond Assistant City Attorney for Public Safety, Kyle’s expertise extends to community policing, as well as qualified immunity. Kyle lead the effort to review and revise the Commonwealth’s community college law enforcement curriculum by working with community leaders and law enforcement officials to ensure that we are doing all that we can to train officers to protect, serve, and earn the trust of every Virginia community. Kyle is a proponent of robust training and strong standards governing conflict resolution, de-escalation, and use of force. We must prioritize police enforcement of criminal offenses and divert resources to human services for other health and safety concerns.
Securing Reproductive Health Rights
Kyle is committed to protecting and advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice. As the United States Supreme Court has skewed more conservative, it is imperative that we do all that we can to secure women’s reproductive health rights at the state level. Kyle believes unequivocally, that every woman should have access to high-quality reproductive health care services, including safe and legal abortion. Kyle will fight to oppose state laws that create barriers to reproductive health and rights.
Protecting Workers and Families
Virginians deserve an economy that works for everyone. COVID-19 has laid bare deep fault lines in our economy, our society, and our health care system. Disparities in health care access, in access to paid sick leave, in environmental quality, in the employment market, and in housing have contributed to disproportionate rates of infection and death among communities of color. Kyle believes that all full-time jobs must come with a living wage, good benefits, paid leave and the ability to join a union and collectively bargain. Over a million Virginians, have zero paid sick days or paid time off. This creates a crisis for low-wage workers who must choose between taking a sick day for themselves or a loved one and getting paid.
Equitable Marijuana Legalization
Kyle is proud to support socially, racially, and economically equitable legalization of marijuana in the Commonwealth. Legalization requires social equity license programs, reinvestment in communities in the Richmond area devastated by the war on drugs, and sealing or expunging records of past marijuana-related convictions. This process must also include the creation of strong employee protections, employment drug-testing laws, and anti-discrimination laws, along with regulations to ensure and safe and healthy workplace. As a lawyer with tremendous experience with marijuana policies across the country, Kyle is proud to lead the way in Virginia.
Common Sense Gun Legislation
Kyle supports the 2nd Amendment. He is a proponent of responsible gun ownership. Kyle believes that we can reduce gun violence while respecting the rights of responsible gun owners by expanding and strengthening background checks. We must have a dialogue and reach an understanding that not every restriction on gun access is an infringement of the 2nd Amendment. Our individual protections under the Constitution are not limitless and should never be at the expense of public health and safety.
